It's amazing how I can not be hungry all day, and when I finally eat dinner I'm famished. Well, I was famished, and 3 hours later I'm content.

The smart thing to do was to go to bed early, but the need for a period movie fix won over. So, I watched half of Jane Eyre disc 2. I would have finished it but email beckoned me. Whenever I watch that movie, I always plug lines from the book in various scenes. No idea how many times I've watched it but I still get emotional. Fantastic book, fantastic movie.

[livejournal.com profile] holbytla will be proud - I'm thinking of buying M. Ward's album, "Hold Time."

Ok, really going soon. Oooooh, email!

I managed to grade one set of reading tests, which my students did surprisingly well on. This could be because it was a fiction story and not the non-fiction we've had for a while. What scares me a little is that they read the story over 3 days with the sub. I left directions to read and ask a lot of comprehension questions, and it took forever for them to read it. They also did Venn diagrams comparing the 2 main characters. With me they partner read the story then we did a story map. What made the difference this time on their tests? I guess I'll never know.

I still have a ton of grading to do but my head/sinuses are not cooperating. So, I think I'll pop another movie in (watched parts of N&S earlier) and try to not think about the pressure in my forehead.

P&P or Jane Eyre, I can't decide.

I hate being sick.

Ok, [livejournal.com profile] holbytla, [livejournal.com profile] jmp0114, [livejournal.com profile] laurasia_mystik and [livejournal.com profile] ewanspotter, it's my mission to get you to watch Sound of Music. I don't know how to achieve this, but at least you know how strongly I feel about it. I already have a verbal agreement with my friend Michelle to watch it the next time she and Reena come over for movie night. It took a little persuasion, which was funny because Michelle loves Mary Poppins, which I hate. Both are Julie Andrews musicals and yet I can't stand one, and she was afraid to watch the other. Anyway, I'll hopefully make the 2 of them into SoM fans soon.

So, today was another Michelle and Reena movie day. We watched Persuasion 1995, which I actually liked. Ciran Hinds wasn't bad, nor were any of the actors really. No one was annoying, which surprised me. The movie was a fine example of England's recycling of actors. I kept recognizing people who would turn out to not be in anything else I've seen. Michelle and Reena could pick people out they really had seen before. We also watched Sense and Sensibility 2008, which Michelle had not seen. Since Reena had just watched the really bad Jane Eyre (1996) this week, we had to show Michelle some of the gems that make it so shockinly bad. Her face was priceless. Before long I found myself watching through my fingers like the first time. It's just baaaaaaaaad. More actor recycling: William Elliot from Persuasion '95 is the same actor who played St. John in '96 Jane Eyre. Ciran Hinds was Rochester in another version of Jane Eyre that I'm too lazy to look up. Amanda Root was Anne in Persuasion '95 and I saw her on the credits for JE '96. Look it up on IMDB. We always have to check it during or after movies.

-We all love S&S '08 Edward Ferrars.
-I decided I'm going to start using the term "twelve month" instead of "year" and I got Michelle and Reena going as well. That and pronouncing "mama" the British way, with the stress on the second syllable. We kept working it into conversation the rest of the night.
-I can't remember the other phrase often used in Austen and Jane Eyre that I like. It's not obliged, amiable, on the contrary, to be sure...wait, maybe it is "to be sure." Must watch Emma again.

I'm already feeling the effects of no sleep. I didn't even get out of bed until 1 p.m. yesterday, so right about now it's been the equivalent of a really long day. So far, I cleaned the toilet around 5, cut up contact paper to cover student dictionaries, took a shower, went to Starbucks and read from about 530-7, and only left because I was freezing sitting in there. I ate an entire apple fritter. o_O It's still raining on and off, and really humid out so the AC feels colder. Giant puddles everywhere; oh how I love living in the desert!

Book recommendation: Les Miserables. I'm sure I'll finish it today, it's that good. Well, that and it lets me procrastinate the mess I need to clean up.

Argh, the grammar nazi in me is flaring up again. For example, typing a.m. instead of just am after the time, or putting html tags to italicize book titles. Why do I care?

I feel like icon hunting.

Today may also be full of random posts, just to warn you.

Mr. Darcy, he is so cute!

Wait, what?

Juno as Jane Eyre?  I haven't seen Juno, but I heard great things about Ellen Page.  Then I saw some weird horror movie at Borders she was in just prior.  So, hmm.  But seriously, another Jane Eyre movie???   Let's hope it doesn't suck like some older versions.

I just read Prince Caspian this last week, and today saw a picture from the new movie. Not sure who the person was with Edmund, Peter and Susan, I checked IMDb and it really is Caspian in the picture. But...unless I read wrong, isn't Caspian way younger in the book? Like young teen at best? He's played by the guy from Stardust, who I'll admit I thought was pretty cute when I saw that. Still, it seems wrong for Caspian to be 26 years old.

A friend lent me Jane Eyre with Samantha Morton and Cieran Hinds. This is the fourth version I've seen, whenever I finish watching it. It's not nearly as bad as 2 of the other versions, but this one I couldn't finish in one sitting. One positive is that finally, I see a Rochester who really is unattactive in personality. However, they made him like Adele right away, which isn't right. Also, speeding through Jane's childhood in 12 minutes? Hmm, yeah. 2006 Jane Eyre is so much love.

Decide for yourself how obsessed/insane/[insert other adjecteive here] I am.
I own: all 6 Jane Austen novels
Pride and Prejudice 1995 and 2005
Sense and Sensibility 1995 and 2008 (yes, [livejournal.com profile] holbytla, I had to get the new one)
Emma 1996, with Gwyneth Paltrow
Mansfield Park 2007
Northanger Abbey 2007

Persuasion 2007 I'm kind of meh about, and I haven't read the book yet. My prediction is that I'll eventually read it.

Let's not forget my 3 versions of Jane Eyre, two of which are so bad that I would burn them if possible, and my multiple copies of Lord of the Rings, both books and movies.

Yes, I do own other books and movies. Just that the ones I really like, well, more is better.

Hmm, both the "nerdy" and "geeky" mood theme pics are of Mr. Collins. I cannot escape him!

Last night, as the preview for Sense and Sensibility on Masterpiece Theater was showing, I got choked up like I haven't done since I watched TLC daytime. What was that about? I was excited, however. This version is darker, slightly more dramatic than the '95 version, but I still liked it. Can't wait to see the rest next week, though I do prefer Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon. What is with the freaky curls plastered to Fanny's forehead, and in both versions??? Was her "son" played by a male or a female actor? To those of you who read the book, wasn't Sir John Middleton's wife as obnoxious in it as himself and his mother-in-law? She just sits there in the movie, with 5 children I also can't remember.

I read Northanger Abbey last week, and am onto Mansfield Park now. I cannot believe how women were treated back then! More thoughts on that later, but for now, dude, you treat Fanny (Mansfield Park) like crap then expect her to not have self-esteem issues? Similar issues with Jane Eyre, though different author.

Amazon shipped my DVDs of NA and MP today, so yay.

Watching Pride and Prejudice still gives me warm fuzzies. Reading or watching Jane Eyre still gives me warm fuzzies and heart flutters. I got totally excited when I found Love, Stargirl, a sequel to Stargirl, at B&N yesterday. Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea should be watched by every person at least once. I totally want to have a kid lately. Would be nice to be married, too.

Fall break, and I need to get some things done, but watching movies and reading books are also on my list.

:)

I bought new Rubbermaid containers yesterday because they have green lids. I already have 2 containers with clear lids that I've only used once, but, dude, green! Today I bought gift bags, again because they are green. That, and 2/$1.

I gave my students pencils today, and it was like I'd given them cash. They thought I was the best teacher ever. Then they started saying I should be married because I'm so pretty. I love my class.

I freaking love comparing the book to the movie Jane Eyre. I also love analyzing the movie, the acting, the faces, everything. Yes, I'm crazy, I know. It's called fangirling.

I haven't torn pages off my calendar in 2 days, but then again, I wasn't home till late last night. I had to go back 60 entries on my flist, like woah. Miss a day, miss a lot.

And now, the obligatory friday_fiver

And maybe I should do the same
1. Have you ever run away?
No, not in the "I hate my parents/life/whatever and am going to strike out on my own" way.  I suppose I run from things often, things I don't want to face or deal with.  Like grading.

2. What is the longest you've dated someone?
Ha, two dates.   I don't think that counts as dating.

3. What don't you like to think about?
See #1.  Turning 30, though it's inevitable and not really that much different.  Cleaning my apartment, though it needs doing.  Making a budget so I can pay off my debts sooner.  How bad my grammar can be at times.

4. What was your last illness?
I had a cold last spring, though people told me it might have been allergies.  I still don't believe that.

5. Do you like to get revenge?
Yeah, don't we all?  I'm not malicious, but I'm human, and I try to save face.

I finally got Jane Eyre back from my friend, and watched it last night and this morning. It's four hours long, not that I watched it twice. I still love it, and I love how I can amuse myself comparing the book to the movie.

Ok, I have things to do today. I need coffee first. Coffee, then work. Eventually I'll tell about my first week teaching 4th grade.

Next time, I'll trust my instincts (and YouTube clips) to know when I should avoid a movie. I'm watching this version of Jane Eyre and I keep muttering how much it sucks, how painful it is to watch, etc. I should have known after seeing a key scene on YouTube that gave me the creeps. At least I only paid about $5 for it after my Borders discounts. The only reason I'm still watching is because I want to actually finish it before I possibly burn it. The only redeeming qualities of this version are Jane isn't so deathly pale, and trying to figure out if they used the same building for Thornfield Hall as in this version which I love which my friend is borrowing.

Ok, must finish watching...through my fingers. Yeah, like the way I'd watch a scary movie.

Edit: Holy crap this version is bad! It took a lot of effort to even finish watching. If it had been my first experience with JE, like first movie version or before I'd read the book, there's no way I'd have become a fan. It's cheesey, it's painful to watch, they left SO MUCH out, and changed a ton of what was left. Seriously, avoid the 1996 version at all costs.

-The day I finally watch LOTR again, I meet a little girl named Arwen. I totally geeked out. :D The girl was with her aunt, not her mom, so I couldn't get the story of how they chose the name.

-Microwaved scrambled eggs rock.

-It's ok to be hot during the day, but at night it blows.

-Scent is often the deciding factor on which cleaning products I buy.

-I really need to go into work tomorrow.

-My friend still has my Jane Eyre dvd and I would go into withdrawl if I didn't have the book to read.

I cannot tell you how happy I am to have a social life again. Not even a social life, just one that isn't dominated by work. This past week, I took a daytrip on Tuesday and have been out every night since. Nowhere special, but at least I've been out with friends. During the school year, I was too tired and/or too busy to do much, especially on weeknights. Tonight we went to Oregano's because I happened to be at Jen and Brian's and we got hungry.

Thursday, Jen and I went to Ikea, where I got some colorful dishes and this patio table and chairs. The set was on clearance for $55, so I couldn't pass it up.
Table! )

I've now read Jane Eyre twice, though the second time was quite out of order. I read middle to end, then beginning to middle. Selected chapters I've read a few more times as well. I love it.

Tomorrow, I will go move my stuff to my new classroom. If all goes as planned, on Tuesday I'll be going to Mexico for the very first time. Woah. I'm just going to Nogales with [livejournal.com profile] intothebean because that's where he's from. I have no idea what to expect there.

If I put my to do list here, maybe I'll be more inclined to actually get things accomplished instead of be online or read or watch Jane Eyre. Yes, it's my current obsession, or fandom, whatever you want to call it, and it's fantastic. So, here goes.

Things I need to do:
-Read Teaching with Love and Logic
-Review the Harry Wong book for things relevant to 4th grade
-Download the state standards for 4th grade
-throw away the pile of papers I thought I might need
-vacuum the apartment
-order my canopy bed!
-continue organizing my photo albums, which I haven't done since last summer
-renew my Costco memebership
-order prints of the many digital pictures I've taken over the past year
-mop the kitchen floor
-retrieve the lid to my traveler mug that fell under the fridge months ago
-take books to school that I don't want cluttering my bookshelf
-get SEI papers taken care of at the district office
-see about taking the AZ constitution course online

I love summer. I love that I can stay up! I've gone back to night owl mode again. I need to get my spare keys back so I can go swimming.

Tomorrow, I should do laundry.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
-I still love Jane Eyre, both book and movie.
-I had fun at the waterslides today with the 8th graders. Evened out my tan a bit, too.
-I dread calculating final grades tomorrow. It makes me feel so incompetent, which I should not feel.
-Tired.
-Forgot what else I might have said here.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
I want to write a paper. The other night, I suddenly wanted something like a comp lit assignment where I'd have to write a 2-3 page paper. I used to DREAD writing papers. What is with me?

Jane Eyre is love.

I want a date.

mmmmmcookiesmmmm

My dvd player still isn't working today. I'm sad! How am I supposed to obsessively watch Jane Eyre over and over again? I guess I must read the book, and fork over the money for a new player. I just hope the vcr half of the machine still works. It's not even 2 years old, and in that time, I think it's gotten the most use in the last 6 months.

After getting myself excited about the possibility of teaching 6th grade next year with two teacher I love, I found out I was placed in 4th grade. I have mixed feelings about this. Two of the three 4th grade teachers are veterans, and I know they will be incredibly helpful while I am learning everything. I feel really fortunate to be able to work with them. However, all 3 of the teachers are older than me, with teen to adult children. The 6th grade team is nearer to me in age, and we get along well. My other concern is the ability level of 4th graders. I student taught that grade, but that was 5 years ago. I know the kids will be much more agreeable (dude, I've been reading too much period lit; who says agreeable anymore??) than 8th grade, but I'm just out of practice teaching that age. And...teaching math again?? Crikey! I've forgotten how to be fun, do fun projects, and assignments that I can hang on the wall. My least favorite class today tells me I need to be more fun, and I pointed out that all efforts I made to do that were shot down by them, plus they never cooperate. I'm going to need a lot of help being creative next year.

Bought Jane Eyre on dvd, the Masterpiece Theater/BBC version. :D Started watching it, and so far, so good.

Meep.

For those of you who have not met me in person, which would be about 90%, you are missing my charming habit of meeping. What in the world is that, you probably ask? Well, most of the time, it's an involuntary vocal response to a beeping sound, a car horn or other similar noises. I kid you not, the first time I did it was after some guy activated his car alarm. It beeped, and I replied with "Meep!" and my friend and I laughed hysterically. As I said, most of the time it's a response to a noise. The rest of the time, it's a happy little sound when I have no other words.

I just finished Jane Eyre, and I meeped. I did it a few times, actually. eek! I seriously LOVE that book. Like whoa. The wait till I can get the movie (and there's 2 or 3 versions that look good) is going to be awful. If anyone has seen any of the movie versions, please let me know which and how you liked it. [livejournal.com profile] holbytla, I already know which you prefer; right now it's top ranked on my list. I just hope Borders has it.

To read another book is almost a scary thought. Will the next book I choose, probably another period drama or classic lit piece, have me in raptures like this? Will I be bored? I need recommendations! Meep!

Yes, I am a dork, and darn proud of it!
