[livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive FOR 24 DECEMBER 2021

1) If you had to build a Christmas tree with just items around your house, what would definitely be part of it?
Baking pans, and items from my stash of chocolate chips and baking bars.

2) What's your favorite holiday to decorate for?
I only decorate for Christmas.

3) What are you best at baking?
brownies and cookies

4) What memorable gift do you still appreciate?
It was actually a few weeks earlier in December, but when Natalie surprised me with a fake tree and some lights that first Christmas I wouldn't be able to go home.

5) What would be a good reindeer name?
Spaetzle.

1) What is your favorite December holiday food?
In my family, we like appetizers before dinner. Like eat all day and then be almost too full for dinner. My favorite is potato chips and onion dip. Must be Ruffles chips, and dip made with Lipton onion soup mix. I just mixed up the dip to bring tomorrow, and it's killing me that I have to wait.

2) What is your favorite December holiday beverage?
I don't have one, but suddenly I want hot apple cider.

3) What is your favorite December holiday song?
O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Last Christmas by Wham, and

4) What is your favorite December holiday tradition?
Having a Christmas tree
ETA: I was reminded by [livejournal.com profile] ragnarok_08's comment of watching holiday specials about my 'tradition' of forgetting to watch Sound of Music each year. I swear it used to be on the Sunday AFTER Christmas, but it's usually a week or two before. So, I either totally forget or am reminded halfway through by someone posting about it online. I'll have to watch my DVD.

5) What is the one thing you will miss most this December because of the pandemic?
Not going home to be with family. Work might have prevented travel anyway, but still.

Nearly time for Thanksgiving here in the US and then a fast ramp up to Christmas. This year, of course, is very different from years past, but the holidays are coming be it Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, or another significant holiday for you at this time.

1. Have you started decorating for holidays yet or are you going to skip it this year?
Right before I saw these questions, I thought I should get my Christmas cactus out. Otherwise, no, I have not started decorating. I may not decorate because we are moving, current date unsure.

2. Will your gift buying be more local or online this year because of restrictions?
I'd like to go up to Pickle Barrel Trading Post one weekend, because I like it and maybe I'll find some interesting gifts. Otherwise, going to be mailing gift cards to the fam.

3. Will you be doing something ‘extra’ to try and give this year’s celebration a bit more sparkle?
I had not even considered anything to that effect.

4. No parties this year, but how are you reaching out to family and friends to wish them well?
I'm invited to Sarah's small family gathering, as I was last year. Otherwise I'd be home alone for Thanksgiving. I can't travel to see my own family for Christmas either, so I'll prob spend it with hers as well.

5. Do you believe in Krampus? If you don't know who it is, follow the link.
I'd not even heard of it until a few years ago.

My boss is back! She was supposed to be back Monday, and didn't show up. However, she was there Tuesday and today. Yay! Though her being back means LOTS O EMAILS!

There was an awesome crescent moon somewhat low in the sky when I left for work this morning, and you could see the faint glow of the rest. I love seeing things like that.

Despite it taking 45 minutes to get home (rush hour and road work/detours), I get to see some pretty awesome sunsets. Now, I need to figure out how to get my iPhone camera to not change the coloring when I take photos of the sky.

I just finished off the pint of Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie. Yum!

I am going to do my online stuff and then put ornaments on the tree. I need to be productive and not sit here all night.

Friday is happy hour after work, and Saturday I invited people to go to dinner for my birthday. 4 yeses so far. I'm doing really low key, and it's all good.

Yesterday was my dentist appointment. I was not looking forward to getting the flossing lecture again. Well shoot, I must be doing something right, and it's not flossing! My numbers for gum recession were the best ever! I am used to hearing lots of 4s, a couple of 5s, and I'm sure there has been a 6 or two (8 is the worst). Nope, all 2s and 3s, and I think two 4s! I was in shock. It was also time for annual x-rays, and no cavities! I was worried about a new sensitive tooth but when the dentist poked around, no pain at all. BOOYAH. The dentist made a passing comment about flossing, but nothing from my hygienist.

I have a haircut appt on Tuesday. I'm debating whether to let it keep growing until it reaches my shoulders, 2-3 more inches. It's starting to get unruly and flip outward at the bottom, not under. Since it's longer, I'm also going to ask about maybe coloring the bottom half. Temporary color, and maybe dark blue.

1. So, how are you really feeling today?
Well-rested, happlily reminded of Edinburgh by my coffee mug, less anxious about work, and excited for my friend's annual holiday kick-off party tonight.

2. Is there something you should have done yesterday, but totally blew off?
Nope. I actually did something I've been meaning to do, which was to see Thor: Ragnarok with Natalie. It was funny and weird and we had a good time.

3. Is there something you need to do today that will likely meet the same fate?
Work on laundry, but that's the chore that never ends.

4. What could make this the best weekend ever?
The party tonight is one I look forward to every year, so that's a good start.

5. If you are in the US, did you take advantage of any Black Friday sales? If not, do you take advantage of sales or just buy things as you need them?
We went to a few stores last night after the movie, but only because they were in the shopping center. I picked up a few things I needed at Target, but did not get anything on sale. I wanted S1 of Victoria because it was $10 but they were out. I usually just buy things as I need them. I went to Target on Thursday night just to see what it was like. The checkout line wound up and down the aisles almost to the back of the store. There was nothing at the store I really wanted/for a good deal. KitchenAid mixers were $100 off, but I already have one. That was the only deal that caught my eye. Plus, even that sale was not worth standing in line for.

I got home late last night. Better late than never.

1. What is your favorite 'food' holiday?
Thanksgiving, because I don't get real turkey any other time of year.

2. Do you prefer ham or turkey (or tofu turkey)?
Turkey. Ham is for Christmas. Well, sometimes my mom gets prime rib.

3. Do you anticipate or dread seeing your relatives for the holidays?
I see my family twice a year, so I look forward to seeing them. I see my extended family even less often, so I love when we do see each other.

4. When do you start listening to Christmas carols (for real, you can tell us)?
As late as possible. Last weekend was the first time I heard a song at a store, and I was not happy about it. However, the Christmas music was better than the kids singing Beatles songs that it alternated with.

5. How are you feeling right now with regards to the upcoming holiday season?
Today I went to a craft boutique and got exactly one gift. I like buying gifts for people, but have the worst time choosing them. If it doesn't scream the person's name, no go. Other than gift shopping, I'm looking forward to going to CA and seeing friends.

It's finally winter break! 2 weeks off! This past week was busy pretty much every evening after work, and at school it felt more like babysitting than teaching. We did some actual work, and started learning division, so it wasn't a total waste. Still, I think kids should get an extra week off and teachers can use the week to get work done. As my teammate said, the kids were cracked out of their minds all week. We did a lot of holiday lessons and next to nothing that was graded. Trying to treat this week like a normal week would have been a disaster.

I still have stuff going on today and tomorrow. Today is making brownies for a coworker who is actually paying for them (I often bring treats for the staff just because), then I need to get a workout in before the Christmas party later tonight. I slept in until 10 today, and my body is still like noooooooooo be lazy, but I have not hit the treadmill since Wednesday so it's also itching to jog. The party tonight is semi-formal and I have no idea what to wear. I don't have time to go to the mall, either. Well, maybe, but no guarantee I'll find a dress.

Tomorrow is just church at 5. I should make some fudge for the gathering afterward. I would have made cookies but I just don't have time. Fudge is quick and easy - just chocolate chips and condensed milk. Maybe I can make cookies in the morning, but I just need to relax. Well, that and wrap presents. Monday I need to do laundry, pack, and meet Michelle for dinner. She takes care of my bettas when I am out of town, and we have not seen each other since last summer. Early Tuesday morning, I drive to my sister's house in northern California. The weather has been insane, and I hope the Grapevine is not covered in snow. I should map out the route taking 101 north instead of I-5, just in case.

Things to do, things to do...

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Maybe if I go to bed, Santa will bring me my British gentleman. Nah, but I can still dream.

Oh, and epic episode of Doctor Who was epic! I need someone to talk about it with! It's from season 6, not the special that will air later today. There may be a chance that I race through the rest of S6 so I can watch S7 that my sister set the DVR to record. That's a LOT of Doctor in a week, after which I'll have to wait like the rest of the world for new eps. Hmm, this plan might just backfire on me.

Arizona can't figure out what season it is. Today it's around 80 outside, but the temperature has fluctuated all week. Going to Tempe Marketplace and Firsta Mall, people are wearing everything from tank tops and shorts to long sleeved sweaters and jeans (me). I woke up ok, felt freezing as I got dressed, then got a little warm walking around the stores. Bath and Body Works was was freezing!

It's also the dreaded time of searching for Christmas presents. Dreaded for me because I think too hard trying to pick gifts. Items have to scream out a person's name for me to buy them, and I'm so distant from most of my family I don't know exactly what their current tastes are. I was also in search of a birthday gift for Alyssa, and the only thing that said her name was a pair of thigh high striped socks on a mannequin. Well, the store didn't actually sell them, or at least I couldn't find them. Alyssa could totally rock those socks with a skirt. Oh well.

I have to go to Fiesta Mall every few months to see what's new. This time around it's Rack Room Shoes, where I got a very cute and cheap pair of brown heels. The store was the most clean and organized of any RRS location I'd been to, and I told them so. They appreciated the compliment.

Ok, enough procrastinating. Chores to do!

note to self: song I really like this year: This is Home - Switchfoot

I must say, I kind of felt like [livejournal.com profile] ewanspotter in that tonight felt like dinner on a Tuesday, but cooked at home, and with presents opened before and after. This is sad, since that's not what Christmas is, though the family being together part is big for me. One positive: as much as my sister can drive me insane, she does have some redeeming qualities. I can't remember the exact example at the moment, but something funny did happen today.

Present news: I got my flute! I had asked for one for my birthday, and long story short, didn't think I was getting one after all. Well, my last present felt a little familiar as I started to unwrap it, and sure enough, there it was. Yay! I even remember the scales, though I'm quite rusty. My brother jokingly told me to play Ave Maria, and I was able to figure out the first few notes. I don't know how much practice I'll actually get, since I might be too self conscious to have my neighbors hear me play. That, and I need a practice book.

:D

Note: I did not go out for coffee today! I made some instant stuff at home, to drink with the blueberry muffins I made. Oh, crap, I did go out for coffee, sort of. I had to take my sister somewhere, and we noticed McDonalds was open. People have been telling me their iced coffee is good, so here was my chance to try it. It was a little too sweet for my taste, and I think it's full of non-dairy creamer. Wait, I use n-d creamer all the time at work. Bah, whatever.
