ringsandcoffee: (Mini-me)
Today would have been my dad's 90th birthday. HOW am I old enough to have a parent that old? My mom is 81, which somehow seems more reasonable.

I don't feel as old as I am. This is weird

1. What type of mood are you generally in on a rainy day?
Rain puts me in a FANTASTIC mood. I live in the desert, so rain is a rare joy.

2. What are your favorite things to do when the weather is gloomy?
Again, desert-dweller, so I love gloomy weather when we get it.

3. Have you ever been kissed in the rain?
no

4. After the rain stops, do you continue what you were doing, or do you run outside to do something else?
Actually, I run outside when the rain STARTS, as I'm usually surprised to see it.

5. What is your favorite drink/food to have when it's raining outside?
I guess a warm drink if it's really cold, like tea or hot chocolate.

1) Do you like your birth-name? Why?
My name, Rebecca Lynn, is so Gen X. I do like it though.

2) If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?
I've always liked the name Elizabeth. If I HAD to change my name, either that, or Maren.

3) What names would you consider giving your children?
That ship has sailed, but I had a list of baby names I would have used: Gabriel, (I literally cannot remember my # 2 boy name right now), Everett, Elias, Dimitri, Elizabeth, Janine, Jenae, Caroline.

4) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?
I never had a band name idea, but as a teenager, I remember thinking a good metal band album name would be "Now look what you've done." Dumb name, but I had some reason for it.

5) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?
I used to hate the name Aaliyah for having too many letters. Just seeing it annoyed me. I'm no longer bothered. I also hated the name Janel, but Janelle was okay.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
If you want to play, ask me for a letter.

[personal profile] fauxklore  gave me P.

Something I hate: peppermint. I disliked most mint flavors as a kid. As I got older, I liked most green mint flavors (regular mint, spearmint), but I still hate peppermint. No candy canes for me!

Something I love: podcasts. I can listen while doing other things, whereas TV or movies I end up stopping to watch. Podcasts also make long car rides more fun.

Somewhere I have been: Paris, France.

Somewhere I would like to go: Pittsburg, PA - I hear it has more bridges than Venice? Also Philadelphia, for a real cheesesteak sandwich.

Someone I know: my friend Pat, who is also my hairdresser.

Best movie: Pride and Prejudice (2005)

1. What is the oldest object in the room with you?
My middle school yearbooks.

2. What is the newest?
Two ornaments I bought on my birthday.

3. What is your favorite object in the room with you?
Hmm, that's tough. Maybe my Christmas tree with the lights on.

4. What is the most valuable object?
Money-wise? The couch or entertainment center. Sentimental value? This glass Dr. Pepper bottle that I bought on the cross-country trip I took with my dad in 2001. I'll have to check my travel journal to see if I recorded where I bought it. At the time, soda in glass bottles were uncommon, so I was excited when I found it at a convenience store. The bottle is holding a few dried roses that either came from bridesmaid bouquets or maybe birthday flowers I'd been given. Or one of each.

5. What is the ugliest object?
The used napkin on the floor that I need to pick up.

1. What did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was really young, a dancer or cheerleader.  Early elementary school, I wanted to be a whale trainer at Marine World (used to be like Sea World, is now an amusement park, no animals as far as I know).  Late elementary school my aspirations changed to marine biologist or veterinarian.  It was around 4th grade that I learned UC Davis, which was about an hour from where I grew up, had the top veterinarian school in the country, so that became the only university I wanted to go to, even after I no longer had a clue what I wanted to be when I grew up.

2. Did you follow through? If not, what happened?
NOPE. By the time I got to college, my major was undeclared - life sciences.  After calculus and chemistry made my GPA take a nose dive, I took a lot of general ed classes while I decided on a new major.  Eventually took the path of becoming a teacher.

3. Is your life turning out the way you thought it would when you were a kid? If not, is it better or worse?
Another big NOPE. Not only did I go in a different career direction, I'm not even a teacher anymore.  Child me NEVER would have guessed I'd end up in the insurance industry.

4. Paradoxes aside, if you could time-travel back to when you were 10 years old, what would you tell your 10-year-old self?
Don't listen to some (a lot) of what Mom says about your appearance.

5. Do you think the child you were, would like the adult you've become?
I think child me would be surprised at how independent adult me is.  I mean, I always have been pretty self-sufficient, but still.

I read these questions yesterday (they are posted early so other parts of the world get to see them ON Fridays), so started thinking of answers.

1. Take a book you've read. Now take the main character. put them in a band. What would the band's name be?
Rochester, from Jane Eyre. He's more the second main character, but whatever. He was the first one I thought of. His band would be called Alone.

2. What instrument would that character play?
Piano, so he could kind of hide behind a large grand piano, but still play impressively.

3. Who else would be in that band?
Jane, of course. Or not? Shoot, I don't know.

4. Would they stay underground or get popular?
Underground, touring dive bars and clubs.

5. Why did you choose that book?
It's my favorite.

1. What is your favorite childhood memory?
The first answer that came to mind was trips to Lake Tahoe when I was a kid.  More specifically, when we would take bike rides around the neighborhood of the house where we stayed, and also down to the Keys.

2. If you could be reincarnated as anything besides human, who would you want to be?
A bird or a fish.  I'd love to be able to fly, or swim underwater all the time.

3. If you had to start your life all over, what are three things you would change?
Believe when told you are not as ugly as you believe.  Aside from that, I don't know.

4. If you had to forget everything in your life, except one thing, what would it be?
This is such an odd (as in one I've never considered) question that I have no idea.

5. Do you have a lucky charm?
No
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
1. Do you celebrate or observe Halloween? How?
Not really. I didn't even pull out my Where's Waldo costume yesterday. However, I did put a bowl of candy out on the patio with a sign saying "Happy Halloween!" in case any trick or treaters came by. None did, all the candy was there when I came home from errands.

2. What is your favorite Halloween candy?
Nerds, Starburst, or M&Ms.

3. Do you get trick-or-treaters on Halloween?
Nope, but I'm not surprised. There's only a few kids here, and I'm sure they go to better neighborhoods.

4. Do you enjoy dressing up in costumes?
It's fun, and I'll do it for an occasion.

5. What is your favorite Halloween memory?
In either 4th or 6th grade, I went as a postage stamp. I made myself a sandwich board out of poster board, and drew a flag stamp on the front one. I miss making your own costumes.

1. What's a song you'd enjoy screaming along to as you drove down the highway?
If I were in a group being asked this, I'd be bouncing in my seat, hand raised, saying pick me pick me! I totally scream AND dance to "
Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" by Jet. I also blasted "Total Eclipse of the Heart" the other day with only minor worry of annoying other drivers. My windows were up to keep the AC in, but I'm sure other cars could still hear me. Guns N Roses and Led Zeppelin also have several better-when-loud songs.

2. What is your favorite place/type of environment to relax?
My couch is great, which is my current location.

3. What are the best kind of dreams?
Ones that don't have to do with my current or past jobs.

4. What do you look for in a mate?
I used to have a few non-negotiables. Now I've just given up. But Miranda Hart recently got married at 51, so there's hope? Still, bare minimum is no smoking or drugs, must be employed, not be an asshole.

5. If you were a crayon color, what color would you be and why?
Falling back on my favorite Crayola colors when I was young: sea green, periwinkle, carnation pink, and just plain green. Nostalgia, really.

1. If you could live in any city in the world, where would you live and why?
The problem is I've only visited cities, not lived there. If we're talking about big cities, then it would be 1) San Francisco, 2) Chicago, 3) London, 4) New York, or 5) Edinburgh. If just "city as in a place I'd love to live," then South Lake Tahoe.

2. If you could speak any language fluently, what would it be?
Spanish, which is useful in Arizona, or German, since it was my dad's first language.

3. When was the last time you rode a ferry and where did you go?
2011 to Martha's Vineyard. I had to check the map, and I may have it written down somewhere, but I think it was from Woods Hole; could have been Falmouth.

4. What was the longest plane ride you've ever taken?
London, UK, to Phoenix, AZ.

5. If you discovered a country, what would you name it?
I don't think I've ever considered this before, so I have no idea.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
1. Most everyone will recommend a book or two to read, but are there any you would tell people to avoid?
As a young kid, I remember HATING Pippi Longstocking, and struggling through The Secret GardenDaniel Deronda started ok but I only finished it for the sake of finishing it (and the miniseries was even more painful).

2. If you take a book on vacation, are you more likely to take something you haven't read yet or an old favorite?
One I haven't read.

3. Do you read any genres by the season? Like horror around Halloween? Cozy Mysteries in the Winter? Romance in the Summer?
No. I mainly read memoirs, then non-fiction, and sprinkle in fiction here and there. I line them on the shelf in the order I bought them, so just read the next one up.

4. If you read a lot of Fiction do you prefer an author that has a series with the same character(s), or do you prefer stand-alone stories?
Not a lot of fiction, but when I do, stand-alones.

5. Is there a book that you wish you could read again, but experience it like it was the first time?
Maybe Jane Eyre,, which is my favorite.

Popping in for thefridayfive as I've been way too busy this past week for a longer post.

1. What is the last shower thought you had (aka random thought in the shower or during downtime)?
I was just in the shower, and must have been distracted by the podcast I had on for background noise. I do have shower thoughts somewhat often. I think the most recent was trying to find the best wording for this concept: Don't put people on pedestals. If you do, don't get mad at them when they don't even know they fell off, or that they were up there to begin with.

2. What is the last thing you changed your mind about?
That side table at HomeGoods I wanted but missed out on a few months back...there was a very similar one at a different location today. 3, actually, in different colors of wood. I ALMOST bought the one that was most like the original I keep a photo of, but some rough spots on the wood gave me pause. That, and I'm spending a bunch of money on other things for the (now) spare bedroom.

3. What was the last low-stakes argument you were in about?
Something with Sarah that I don't remember.

4. What is an idea you have that you know would probably never work, but it would be cool if it did?
Somehow getting paid to travel...

5. Who is someone who has ideas you like, or take inspiration from?
I get ideas from food bloggers pretty often. I get inspired and encouraged by Brant and Sherri from their podcast, The Brant and Sherri Oddcast, which I've listened to for over a decade.

1. Are you and your birth family close?
I'd say yes, but I know families who are closer.

2. How far away do you live from your various family members?
I live in a different state (AZ) from my mom and siblings (CA). I have cousins on the other side of the country, and also in Nevada and Washington.

3. When was the last time you visited with relatives?
My sister and I traveled to New York City in April. I am flying to California tomorrow, and will see at least my mom and sister. Maybe my brother, and maybe a cousin if I'm feeling really social.

4. Do your relatives travel to visit you?
No. One cousin was down here on a road trip, and we had dinner. My sister wants to come down here once it's not so hot outside. I travel up to California twice a year to see family though.

5. How do you stay in touch with family: phone calls, email, snail mail, texts, other?
Mostly phone, email, or text.

1. Are you good at fixing things?
Simple fixes. I've always loved the challenge of undoing big knots. I try to fix simple things like jewelry clasps, patching a wall, unclogging a drain. Last weekend, with the help of a YouTube video, I unclogged and reset the garbage disposal. I think we've lost the last of our tiny plastic measuring spoons down there. I worked for 2 summers in turning apartments in my college town, which taught me a bunch of easy repairs. For bigger stuff, I'd rather pay a professional.

2. What kinds of things can you fix?
Oops, answered this above.

3. Is there anyone in your family who is good at fixing things?
My dad was. He was an electrician of sorts. He worked at a naval base until it was shut down in the 90s, and then worked part time at a hardware store. At home, he was always working on the yard, around the house, and did the car maintenance.
My brother is the computer fix-it guy.

4. Has anyone ever taught you how to fix things?
Not really. Some things I try to figure out on my own. When I was a kid, we had this book called How to Fix Just About Anything that I liked to look through. Now, Google and YouTube are my go-tos when something goes wonky.

5. What was the last thing that broke in your home?
The garbage disposal last weekend.

 1. Have you seen a solar eclipse? Total, Partial, Annular? When and where?
I've seen all 3, though where I live has never been in the path of totality for the total and annular eclipses.

2. Have you seen a lunar eclipse? Full? Partial? When and where?
Yes to both. I saw the full eclipse in 2022, and I remember another full eclipse sometime between 2006-2010, or at least trying to stay awake for it.

3. Have you seen a comet? Which one? When and where?
I'm pretty sure I saw Halley's Comet in 1986. I think I saw Hyakutake and Hale-Bopp as well.

4. Have you seen a nova or supernova? When and where?
I don't think so. When the local astronomy club did a space night for the 5th graders, they showed me a few specific stars but I forgot what was significant about them. I remember just being excited to see Saturn's rings.

5. Have you seen a meteor shower? Which one, when and where?
Several times. Usually the Persid in August and Leonid in November.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
Since I can rarely choose one, you get my kind of answers.

1. Rice or potatoes?
Both. I eat potatoes more often, usually because it's what's available, but I love both.

2. Fish or red meat?
Definitely red meat. I dislike seafood 99% of the time, with the exception of canned tuna and the occasional shrimp.

3. Salad or cooked vegetables?
Both. Just depends what I'm craving, or what's available. Just make sure veggies aren't cooked to death.

4. Cake or ice cream?
Usually cake, but again, whatever I crave at the moment. Today's task is making a cake to bring to Easter lunch tomorrow.

5. Water, soft drink, wine, beer, or hard alcohol?
Water (usually seltzer) at home. Soda if getting fast food. If I'm drinking, then white wine or a cocktail. Not a beer fan, but I'm open to tasting some.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
 1. What's a skill you'd like to learn?
I'd love to learn another language. Spanish would be most useful where I live.

2. What's a hobby you'd like to try?
Knitting or crocheting.

3. What's the best compliment you've ever received?
Anytime people say something about me being a good teacher. I'm not in a classroom anymore, but I'm still teaching at work in some way pretty much daily. Answering questions, showing how to do something, explaining something. When people compliment my patience or that I make something make sense, it makes me happy.

Compliments on my baked goods are also always happily accepted.

4. What's one way in which you are awesome?
lol, how do I answer this? I guess I make really good cookies and brownies. I think I'm a pretty good friend as well.

5. What's a gift you would like to receive (in case anyone asks)?
My love languages are coffee and baked goods that someone else made. I'll also take a paid vacation to Europe, or a cabin in Lake Tahoe. :)
