THE FRIDAY FIVE FOR 14 SEPTEMBER 2018: WEATHER EXTREMES
This Friday Five is brought to you by Hurricane Florence and yours truly.
1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?
Nope. Never lived on that side of the country.
2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celcius)?
Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*breathes*HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I live in Arizona. It's over 100 pretty much from June through September and beyond. Last summer there were a couple of weeks (one in June, one in July) where we hit 120. 115 is not unusual. After that, 100 feels wonderful. Actually, anything under 110 we don't complain too much (as long as your AC works). It's the fact that nights only get down to the 80s that makes me dislike the summer. Right now we are in a streak of days around 105. Yes, in mid September. Granted, this summer was milder than other I've experienced in my 13 years here, and we had several days here and there when the high was 98 or 99. However, we can see days over 100 into October. We do have that wonderful dry heat though. July and August are monsoon season, when humidity averages around 40%. There are days when it's REALLY hot and humid, which usually means it rains after sundown. I've been able to sit outside during lunch and not roast, which is lovely.
3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?
Um, something in the teens (*F) when I was in a snowy place. I don't know what the actual temperature was.
4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?
Nope. Need the AC to survive. In the winter, I would be okay.
5. Do you have a go bag?
Nope.

Date: 2018-09-14 06:17 pm (UTC)2) After two years in Bahrain, I could answer "yes" to the question of "Have you experienced a sustained period of 100 degree + weather exceeding more than 100 hours?"
3) Hrm. Junior year of college we had a power outage when it was 20F. In childhood we had nights that went below zero.
4) With supplies? Yes. Psychologically? Some of us would make it. Not Jason. Toss up as to whether the kids could stay entertained. (We had a 56-hour outage in March. It was interesting to see how the different people in my house handled it.)
5) Currently no. They advised us to keep one in Bahrain, and I did but it was pointless, honestly. Otherwise, only when I was 37+ weeks pregnant.

Date: 2018-09-16 02:59 pm (UTC)1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?
Not full blown, no. Here in NY we usually get the remnants a few days/a week later - usually just a lot of rain.
2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celcius)?
Yes, it does get this hot here in NY occasionally. ACTUALLY over 100 is pretty rare, but we had about 5-6 days this summer. Heat index of 100+ is pretty common thanks to humidity.
3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?
Every. Single. Winter. The worst one lately was 3 years ago in February (I only remember because we went to CA that month). For a large chunk of the month, it was in the single digits or negative numbers and the wind chill was -20 to -30.
4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?
Yes! A generator was one of the first purchases we made when we bought our house. Got to really test it out last year with the wind storm that knocked out power for 3-4 days.
5. Do you have a go bag?
We have important documents in a centralized, safe location but otherwise..nope.
