ringsandcoffee: (the One Ring)
 1. Do you plan to watch the Oscars broadcast this Sunday?
Nope, have not watched in years.

2. Have you seen many of this year's Oscar-nominated films?
I saw Top Gun: Maverick, which I am shocked was nominated. Other than Avatar and Everything Everywhere All at Once, I had not even heard of the other nominees.

3. Which movie is your pick for Best Picture?
Don't know, don't care, but maybe a tiny part of me wants EEAAO.

4. What are some of your other picks to win Oscars?
Again, I don't even know who's nominated this year.

5. What is your favorite movie of all time?
Ha, as if I can choose one.
Pride and Prejudice (2005)
most of the Star Wars franchise
Lord of the Rings
Dirty Dancing

THE FRIDAY FIVE FOR 24 FEBRUARY 2023: “YOU’VE GOT MAIL!” EDITION

1. What’s the last thing you got in the mail?
An Amazon package that made me panic since I wasn't expecting anything, until I opened it to find the Crumbs and Doilies cookbook I ordered a few weeks ago. It came from the UK, thus the delay, and me completely forgetting I'd ordered it.

2. What’s the last thing you sent in the mail?
2 posters, to 2 different people.

3. How many unread emails are in your inbox right now?
None in my main inboxes. Gmail promotional and social don't show notifications so I don't check those often. One email that I only check 2-3 times a month has some unread, but again, I hardly check that one. In the many, many years I've had it, spammers have not found it.

4. What is your most recent text message about?
conversation with my work friend Jen about when she'll be working again.

5. Do you have a favorite postage stamp design?
I like fun stamps, as in not the regular flag design. I have several partially used sheets of fun designs from back when I thought I'd send post cards more often. Dinosaurs, Elvis, national parks, etc. Buuuuuuuut, that didn't happen.

1.You’ve been home from vacation for a week now, what still needs to get done?
Either putting some clothes away or just a handful of small items. The suitcase might still be sitting empty on the floor.

2. Have you detected any signs of Spring/Fall yet?
We're getting an extra long, extra chilly winter here in the desert, and I LOVE it.

3. How often do you check the batteries in your smoke alarm?
Never. They get changed when that shrill, annoying dead-battery chirp starts.

4. How is your weekend looking?
Fabulous. First movie day with Reena and Michelle in close to 2 years!

5. What could really stand to be replaced in your home right now?
My currently non-existent bathroom vanity. I threw away the ugly top yesterday, and I'm not going to have the old one reassembled. Also, new toilets. I don't know where they found the current ones, but they are abnormally tall. 18 inches w/o the seat. It's a bit tall for me, but for poor Sarah, well she puts up with it.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
1. Who would you like to be able to get into contact with?
For some reason, I've often been curious about a friend from preschool, Kristy, and also my best friend in 1st grade until she moved away, Robin. Kristy has a pretty common last name, and I don't remember Robin's, so can't really search for them.

2. How do you make yourself go to sleep when you can’t seem to get to sleep?
Usually melatonin or Zzzquil, but I've tried to limit using either unless really needed.

3. What language(s) do you wish you could speak?
Spanish, as it would have really helped when I was teaching, and also because it's common here in Arizona.
German, as many of my paternal relatives speak it.
Italian, because it's so lovely to listen to.

4. What is it about people that confused you the most?
When they aren't willing to see another viewpoint. When they are so stuck in their ways and can't or won't change.

5. What major company do you despise the most?
I don't despise, but I'm not really a fan of Amazon. I only use them if given a gift card or if I can't get a needed item anywhere else. I found out there's some software my company uses that is run by Amazon, so I guess I can't completely avoid it.

FRIDAY FIVER
1. What's a food you liked when you were younger but don't anymore?
Strangely, I cannot think of any. As soon as I post this, one will pop into mind.

2. What's a food you used to not like but now you do?
I wouldn't touch sour cream as a child except in the form of onion dip. Probably because the tubs of sour cream for regular use usually got moldy. It wasn't until college that I had a sour cream and chive baked potato and it was amazing. I also disliked avocado for a long time; now I love it. Brussels sprouts if they are cooked right. My mom used to boil them to death, and no amount of butter could save them.

3. What's a food you enjoy eating both warm and cold?
Pizza! Roast beef on sandwiches. Turkey - like Thanksgiving dinner and then as leftovers. Cheese. Coffee.

4. Are there any foods you can't get anymore? Why not?
My favorite cereal growing up, Crunchy Corn Bran. It's been discontinued as far as I can tell, have not seen it in several years. Quaker makes something similar but it's just not the same.

5. What's your favorite "breakfast for dinner" (or "dinner for breakfast") food?
I'll often have cereal for dinner, and sometimes pancakes or waffles. Sometimes scrambled eggs on toast. The only dinner for breakfast I have is leftovers, but cold pizza makes an EXCELLENT breakfast.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
Very rarely do I actually get onto Tiktok. I watch videos posted elsewhere but just never got into it otherwise. My sister watches for hours on end. When I'm here, I listen as she watches across the room. Last night, something came on that made me need to get on Tiktok to search for it. Luckily I found it on YouTube. It's priceless.

1. What is the last song/bit of music you heard?
I was listening to podcasts all day today so whatever music was playing at the outlets where I briefly stopped.

2. What is the song you can't get enough of right now?
None in particular. I keep thinking of songs that I don't remember seeing when I was reloading my iPod, and checking for/listening to that.

3. What song/band did you just discover and think are great?
Ok so I listen to the classic rock station mostly, or the stations that play older stuff. So I haven't recently discovered anyone.

4. Do you listen to the same song over and over on repeat? Why?
When I'm depressed, yes. It's been quite a few years but when I was sad about a guy, I listened to Hold Me Now by Thompson Twins or Crush by Dave Matthews Band on repeat. Sometimes if I'm listening to my ipod I'll repeat a song.

5. Do you make music, or do you want to?
No. I wish I had the time and energy to relearn the flute, but that's never going to happen.

last week
1. Do you tend to remember book titles or authors the most?
Titles. Authors too if it's a memoir.

2. Do you play any memory games to try and improve your memory?
No, but according to my sister I should be playing Wordle. Maybe not for memory, but she was giving me a hard time over the fact I have zero interest in it.

3. What is the very first movie you remember seeing in a movie theatre?
Either ET at the drive-in, or some sad movie that my mom dragged me along with her to see at the theater. All I remember was someone dying at the end.

4. What sense do you tend to rely upon the most?
Definitely vision.

5. When was the last time you felt lonely and what made you feel better?
I never really feel lonely, but once in a while my singleness feels heavier than normal.

yesterday
1. How many stars can you see in the sky at night where you live? (Not looking for an exact number here, just a general description.)
There's a good amount of light pollution where I live, so you can see the major constellations and a smattering of other stars.

2. What is your favorite constellation?
The Big Dipper, and I was going to say The Pleiades, which I had to search for the name of. I guess it's not a constellation but a star cluster.

3. Are you able to see and identify any planets in the sky? Which ones?
I can usually tell if there's a planet visible, but can't tell which one it is.

4. Have you ever seen a satellite orbiting above the earth?
I think once or twice.

5. Have you ever seen a rocket blasted off into space?
Only on TV
ringsandcoffee: (huh what)
1) What are you wearing right now?
a sleeveless, jersey knit dress.

2) What would you rather be wearing right now?
Since it's hot outside, the dress is fine, though it's seen better days.

3) What is your favorite outfit of clothing that you currently own and wear?
My blue with white stripes dress I got 2 years ago. Still have yet to find another even remotely like it.

4) What is your favorite outfit of clothing that you have ever worn?
I had a few sweater and jeans combos that I really liked. I liked the 4 times I was a bridesmaid, because pretty dress!

5) What was the last new or new-to-you garment you bought or acquired?
I bought 2 tee shirts while in CA. A Cal shirt in Berkeley that turned out to be too small. It was $10 so I'm not too sad. Same day, we found an American Giant store in Berkeley. They are mainly sold online. I grabbed another of their V-neck tees that I like.

1. Can you impersonate anyone famous?
No, but I know I sometimes try.

2. Can you do any accents other than your own?
Back when I lived with Allyson, I attempted British accents. However, after Allyson said that I sound more mentally challenged than British, I gave up.

3. Do you have a strong local accent?
No. Neither California (where I grew up) nor Arizona have distinct accents. CA has what's called valley girl, but I don't have that.

4. What's your favorite accent?
British or Italian

5. If your family hated your current partner, would you ditch him/her or carry on with him/her despite the protests?
No current partner to speak of, but if this were the case, it would depend on WHY they hated him. If it was a legit problem on his side, then we probably wouldn't be together. If it was something dumb they didn't happen to like, well they'd need to suck it up and deal.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
1) What's the most cluttered spot in your home?
Does 'cluttered' indicate messy, or just a lot of stuff? The shelves over the washer and dryer are pretty full, but completely organized. Actually, any spot that has a lot of stuff is also organized. So, I don't know the answer to this question.

2) What's your method for decluttering?
I always have a Goodwill bag ready to receive stuff I no longer want or need. Over the past year, I've also given a ton of stuff away to my local Buy Nothing Group on FB.

3) What are your favorite cleaning products?
Generally, things that are not too harsh, and/or things that smell good. I like Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day hand soap, and recently got a few fun scents of dish soap too. Tide or Persil detergent, Cascade dishwasher pods, Pine Sol for general cleaning, sometimes Soft Scrub. Oh and I have a bunch of multi-purpose spray cleaners, again generally towards natural ingredients and/or scents I like.

4) What helps get you motivated to clean up?
I try to stay tidy and clean, and try to clean as I go. But, there are times where I let random items gather, or the floor gets dirty, and I break down and clean when it starts to irritate me enough.

5) What's the most organized spot in your home?
LOL, didn't see this when I answered the first question. I don't think anywhere is DISorganized. Not even the junk drawer. Maybe my bathroom drawers, as they keep collecting things I think I'll need later.

1. How tall would you like to be if you had the chance to choose?
I'm smack average at 5'6" but would like to be 5'7" for reasons unknown.

2. How often do you change your sheets?
Every 2-3 weeks, usually closer to 3. I shower before bed, before anyone gets grossed out.

3. When is it time to repurpose an old towel?
When it gets scratchy or has a foul odor. Or, when I've had it forever and get sick of the color.

4. Do you need to make a trip to a secondhand store to drop something off?
I just did this earlier this week, because the the effort of posting the items in the Buy Nothing Group, then having to arrange pick-up, was more work than I wanted to do at the moment. I pretty much always have a bag or box out for Goodwill. I try to list stuff on Buy Nothing more now, but sometimes I just need things GONE.

5. What was the last book you borrowed from the library?
For a while I was checking out audiobooks, but haven't since 2020. Last one was Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid.

Memorial Day is almost here (at least in the US) and it’s the unofficial start to the summer season.

1. Do you have any big plans for the summer/winter (depending upon your hemisphere)?
Phoenix Fan Fusion this coming weekend, and Natalie is coming for it. It was cancelled the past 2 years, so yay for the return! Otherwise, I have no vacation plans yet.

2. Have you ever been or are you a fan of camping?
Funny, I said to someone today I like camping, and like it better when someone else brings all the camping equipment.

3. Did you ever go to a sleep-away camp in the summer when you were a kid?
In 6th grade we (both classes at my school) went to science camp for 5 days in the fall. I'm trying to remember if another school was there at the same time. It seemed like more than 60 kids were there. I also went to church camp for a week each summer in middle and high school. Hume Lake. I LOVED it.

4. What is going to be the high point of the fast-approaching season?
Fan Fusion. It getting freaking hot outside. Wait, heat is the low point.

5. What is your favorite way to beat the heat/ be warm and toasty?
Hide inside where there's AC. Sometimes go swimming, but soon the pool will feel like a tub. It has zero shade over it. Maybe I can gather some people to go tubing on the Salt River.

Well hmm, LJ is still here. Yay!

Anyway, onto thefridayfive

1. How many hours a day/night do you usually sleep?
Weeknights, 6-8. I try to get to bed by 10pm and my alarm goes off about 6am. However, I never fall asleep right away, and often wake up before my alarm. My work schedule changes to an hour earlier next week, ack.

2. What do you do when you can't sleep?
I use melatonin regularly, so I don't have that problem. Back in the day, I'd toss and turn, or play with my phone, or before that, play on my computer.

3. How often do you devote time to just thinking about something?
Not as often as I need to.

4. If you had to choose one person to never talk to again, who would you choose?
I'd say I do that anyway. So at the moment, I can't think of anyone I need to cut out of my life.

5. If you had to choose one person, NOT your significant other, who you would speak to every day for the rest of your life, who would you choose?
Firs thought was Allison. But I'm not entirely sure.

1) What's the best idea you've gotten from the internet?
Less idea, more inspiration, from food blogs. I was first introduced to Pioneer Woman's blog long before she was famous by someone (no longer) on LJ. At that time, she had just started posting recipes with step-by-step photos. I never made that grilled steak salad that immediately grabbed my attention, but I also never forgot it. After a while, she made a separate section just for cooking, and then started linking other food blogs. I was hooked ever since.

2) What's the best advice you've heard from someone much older than you?
Not in these exact words, but basically just because someone says it about you doesn't mean it's true.

3) What advice would you give your younger self?
Love yourself as you are, no matter what you look like.

4) What advice have you received, but chose not to take?
My mom and sister have often given me unwanted advice. Mainly, get my teeth fixed.

5) Do you need advice on anything going on in your life these days?
Don't we all?
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
1. What's your favorite candle scent?
None in particular. I have this tea and lemon one I need to finish off, but it wasn't really cold enough this winter for candles.

2. Do you have an artistic or crafty hobby? What is it?
Baking, if that counts.

3. What's one weird way you save money on food?
At times when I'm out and hungry and want to cruise through the drive-thru, I'll try to think of what I have in the fridge or freezer, and convince myself to go home and cook it. That only occasionally helps me save by not eating out, but still.

4. Do you collect anything weird or unusual?
Magnets, mugs, post cards from my travels. Also those flattened pennies that cost 50 cents or a dollar. The dollar machines at Disneyland were all, we provide the penny!

5. Do you fear the deep ocean, or does its unknown depths excite you?
I'd love to watch someone else go down there, or watch video footage.

To be fair, the questions were posted yesterday. But, I love doing [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive no matter what day.

1) Read any good books lately?
Yes! How The Word Is Passed by Clint Black. I'm also reading through cookbooks and sticky-tabbing recipes I want to make.

2) Taken any good baths lately?
Having a big bathtub is a dream of mine that will never come true. Sarah's bathroom has the combo tub/shower, I just have a shower. So, I never get a bath at all. I could have at my sister's house in December, but I wasn't in the mood then.

3) Do you read paper books, or do you prefer another format?
Paper books mainly, and the occasional audiobook.

4) Where's the most comfortable place in your home?
Probably where I am now, sitting on the couch.

5) What's the most relaxing sound you can put on?
I like music in the background, but the most soothing sound is rain. Ocean waves too.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
Going to try to post both here and LJ, and also try to read both sites. I don't know which LJ people are also here, but I'm trying to add them here too, if we aren't already DW friends.

1. Do you write letters on a regular basis or just for special occasions?
Only on special occasions. I can't even get the motivation for Christmas/holiday cards anymore.

2. Do you stockpile cards and notepaper?
I used to. I need to stockpile a few more birthday cards, but never feel like looking at them when at stores. I used to stockpile both cards and stationary, and have some leftover from many years ago. In the fall, I found a blank greeting card with a photo of the Beatles on the front in my collection. Pretty sure I got that card in the 90s.

3. Are you in the habit of writing thank you notes or just send something via e mail and call it good enough?
I'll usually thank the person on the spot or text them.

4. Do you have any stickers or fun ink stamps?
Again, I used to. I finally got rid of the rubber stamps I had since elementary school, I think when I moved last year. They rarely got used, and it was more sentimental value. I also had a collection of stickers from childhood that I didn't want to use, but liked to look at on occasion.

5. Without looking (and I’m going to have to trust you here), how many stamps do you currently have on hand (a roll, a sheet, something like that)?
I have some boring stamps in my wallet, and then I have a few sheets of fun stamps: Elvis, national parks, and maybe some dinosaurs? I was sending postcards for a while but that dropped off.
ringsandcoffee: (Default)
I meant to do this [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive yesterday, but didn't get onto my laptop until late in the evening.

1) What sort of alarm wakes you up in the morning?
the alarm on my phone

2) If you can sleep in, how late to you sleep?
I'm usually awake, really awake, by 10am My weekend alarm goes off at 9 but I never get up then. I often wake up before my alarm, like today at about 8:30.

3) What's for breakfast?
I don't usually eat breakfast. On work days, I'll have fruit snacks when I get hungry. Otherwise I sip on my iced coffee with milk. On weekends, I'll eat breakfast when and if I'm hungry.

4) What makes you late to your next big thing?
I'm painfully early to just about everything.

5) What's your favorite caffeinated beverage?
My daily drink, iced coffee with milk.

These questions were written by [livejournal.com profile] archersangel.

1. What is the first TV show you remember watching?
Not 100% certain, but I think Scooby Doo. ETA: after reading some other responses, I was reminded of Sesame Street.

2. What is the first “grown up” TV show you watched?
Probably soap operas because my mom was watching. As the World Turns and Guiding Light.

3. What is the first TV show you watched from the start to finish when it aired live (i.e., not via reruns)?
LOST, which may also be the only show I've watched entirely.

4. What is the oldest TV show you’ve watched?
We caught an old episode of Doctor Who while in England. Couldn't tell you which episode, or even which Doctor it was. ETA: I Love Lucy

5. What is one TV show you will stop and watch if you come across it on TV, even though you've seen every episode at least 20 times?
