I'm having another "What have I done quitting my job?!?" moment. Looking up cooking jobs, everything requires experience I don't have. Whatever happened to on the job training???

I will look for something in the field of education, but not another teaching position. At least not in the public schools. Might as well apply at Sylvan come summertime. Long story short, I don't think I'm meant to be in the classroom anymore.

It's raining and cold. Must enjoy this while I can.

Someone just please hand me a job, please? Searching scares me.

I'm not sure what kinds of opportunities will pop up for you, and I don't know how t he US system works, but my mum moved out of her classroom job a couple of years ago. She was a primary (elementary?) classroom teacher but switched to become a school librarian. She loves it, and she seems much happier now than she did as a regular teacher. She had to re-train but the department of education hired her before she was qualified and she studied part time as she worked for the first year.

As budgets keep getting cut, extracurriculars and even librarians go on the chopping block. Teachers, sadly, aren't really valued in the US anymore.

Oh dear. That is not good at all! I should be careful of offering advice - sometimes things are different where I don't expect them to be :(
Maybe instead of advice I will just stick to praying!

Oh, don't worry. But prayer is appreciated :)

My HS English teacher quit her job for many of the same reasons you have. She worked for Sylvan for a summer and then did some work for Kaplan before figuring out exactly what she wanted to do.

I wish you the best on this journey!

Thanks. I just keep looking at different doors, seeing which are open and which are closed to me.

*hugs* Taking a break, permanent or otherwise, from the classroom seems like a good idea.

Re: cooking: how about trying for some hours at a sandwich shop or something, where it doesn't seem like very much experience would be needed?

I worked at a sandwich shop in high school. I also have experience in fast food (Carl's Jr.), a dining area in college with several different sections, and Starbucks. My favorite part of the dining area was the burrito bar, which is pretty much identical to working at Chipotle. SO, I have food experience, but it was long ago.

I know somehting is out there, and I just need to keep looking.

Do you have a feel for what you really want?

I want to do many things - cooking, baking, organization, maybe teaching abroad. Nothing feels certain...yet.

Around here - even secretary jobs require some sort of pre-training and degree.

What the hell do I need a degree for? I know how to type, pick up a telephone, and I know the alphabet :-P

It is scary :-/ I'm there with ya but I'm also confident we will find what we're supposed to!
