Emma, book and movie, thoughts

mademoisellenon: I agree, Emma is a feel-good movie. Predictable, but cute. After finishing the book last night, I couldn't wait to see the movie.

ewanspotter: I assume you've seen Emma because Ewan is in it. Well, even if not, hear this: I can forgive the horrid wig he wore for the fact that he sang. *swoon* Too bad his character was way reduced from the book, or maybe, due to the wig, that's a blessing.

holbytla: Ahh, my fellow Austen-addict. Yes, I am an addict, though I'm sad that I've now read and/or seen all six books. The book was hard to get into, but of course, wanting to know what happens, I got hooked and read it nearly every night. I kept trying to guess who (or even if) she would end up with when I remembered you having mentioned a certain name in your profile. Still, it totally caught me by surprise. As for the movie, I couldn't wait for the new version on Masterpiece Theater, so I just got the 1996 dvd. They cut Frank Churchill WAY down! He got so much more attention in the book. Not that I'm complaining (see above comment about the wig), actually I think they did well in emphasizing what mattered. The insult to Miss Bates was quite well done. It made more sense in film than in print.

I really loved Emma (the book). I would say it was my favorite one of Austen's, but I can't, since I've loved all the ones I've read so far.

I really liked the book as well. I'll eventually read Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey, but it won't be the same since I've seen the movies.

Emma is the worst performance of Ewan McGregor's career.

And that's saying a lot. Something just didn't gell.

I only forgive him because one, they made him wear that terrible wig, and two, at the time has doing that movie, he was ALSO DOING A BILLION AND FIVE THINGS in the '94 to '96 timeframe and he was (as he said so himself once) just worn out.

I'm glad you liked the movie. It is a feel good flick for sure.
Sorry I kind of gave things away! One of the downsides to the internet, I think.

And the Emma airing on PBS is actually an old BBC version, but it's new to me and you, so it doesn't really matter. Just wanted to clarify in case of there being some reason you'd need to know.

I may have to watch OMF, since reading it just isn't going to happen. However, my next book appears to be Atonement, since the movie is up for an Oscar and so I got it yesterday.

I think the best thing to do about Mutual Friend is to watch the movie first. It's breaking the rules, but then if you love it (as I do, oh so much) then you can go through the, at times, attention-trying book.

Be sure to tell me how Atonement is! I'm too chicken to try it right now because it has War in it and I am nothing if not squeamish about that type of thing.

I've read a couple chapters so far. It's very wordy, as in uses a lot of flowery (but not cheesey) language, so I'm not sucked into it yet. Getting there, but not yet.

Yay Emma!! I haven't read the book, though I've wanted to since FOREVER. But the movie is my second favorite Jane Austen film adaptation (BBC P&P is still #1). Yes, it's predictable ... but it gives me too many warm fuzzy wuzzies for me not absolutely love it. And what can I say about Ewan and his singing that hasn't already been said <3333 ^_^ So Frank has a much bigger part in the book? I always thought there should have been a lot more to his character than what was in the movie, so I'm excited that there actually is!!

Oh, man, Frank is all over the book! More Jane Fairfax too, but not as much as Frank. You should read it just for the sake of reading it. Of the 3 I've read, I'm not sure which is my favorite book, but all had their good points.

Also, warm fuzzies for reals! Movie <3
