I can't believe it

It's been there for 2 days, but I just realized that I have a non-Lord of the Rings icon. This is a first. Phantom of the Opera has become my obsession for a few days. I don't think it will replace LOTR, but seeing the movie has brought back my love for the story and the play. It started in 8th grade when we sang portions of the musical in chorus. My teacher read us a shortened version of the book to familiarize us with the story, and showed us the Lon Chaney movie version. He also showed us this version, which I don't think I ever got to see the end of. It was a made for tv movie, so I couldn't find it to rent. I read the book that summer, (which I highly recommend) and got to see the play in SF sophomore year. I have the original cast recording on cd. Now that you all know my Phantom history (ha ha) I shall wax philosophical about the story itself.
In the play, I particularly remember feeling the Phantom's pain when he was grieving over Christine and her love for Raoul. The sound effects and his screams emphasized his emotion. In the movie, one of my favorite parts is when Raoul and Christine are on the roof of the Opera house (singing All I Ask of You) and the Phantom is spying on them. He loves Christine so much (in his own twisted way, yes I know it's not particularly healthy) and so it kills him to see her declare her love to someone else. I think I relate to him in a small way. He loves someone and longs to be loved, but he is not loved back. He sees the object of his affection happy with another. I'm not in love with anyone, but I do get sick of being single at times. I get tired of seeing happy couples all the time, or hearing that yet another couple I know got engaged. I mean, I'm not all depressed about this, but just once in a while, I want what they have. Hmm. Someday, it will be my turn.
