Silly things I can't get rid of
Jun. 20th, 2011 05:03 pmMoving out of my classroom = purging. Moving to a new townhouse = purging. The time and space in between = a ton of organizing.
So I have this pencil cup on my desk. It was a souvenier cup (when you purchased the snow cone) from the Ringling Bros. circus I went to in 4th grade. The circus where the tightrope walkers didn't have a net under them. My 10 year-old eyes were peeled that entire act, especially with the chair balanced on 2 people riding bikes across the rope. Circus aside, that cup became a pencil cup soon after I brought it home, and has been ever since. It's old. It's scratched. It's a bit ridiculous, and still, I cannot get rid of it. I've tried several times, but I just can't do it.
Then there's the black jacket. I got it in college, at Old Navy, when they were still a halfway decent store. It's nylon outside and fleece inside, has a hood, and a big pocket below the half-zipper. In said pocket is a quarter that Chad gave me when we went to Tahoe one day(in 1999 I think). It's an XL, and I sort of look like I'm drowning in it when I wear it. I only wear it on those rare occasions I go camping or will be out in the cold. It's not even the warmest thing, but good for layering. Otherwise, it's in the back of the closet, mostly forgotten. I almost put it in the Goodwill bag today. It's old and rarely used, yet, again, I cannot part with it.
ETA: Alarm clock that used to be white with pink buttons, but is now mostly yellow with pink buttons, also cannot be parted with. I got it when I was about 10!
The good news is I have parted with a bunch of other stuff. When I realize what clutter I still have, neatly hidden in a few boxes or drawers as it is, it makes me twitch.
