From the mouths of babes
Feb. 1st, 2006 07:36 pmI had some extra time in my classes today. Not really extra, but just not enough time to do the writing I wanted to start. Anyway, I had some impromptu discussions with my 7th and 8th grade classes. You find out the most interesting things from students, if you just ask, such as:
*Why go to the local high school (in Phoenix) when you can go to Oceanside, CA, Seattle, WA, or Mexico?
*Schools in Mexico FAR supercede our school. Or, in their actual words, "Schools are better in Mexico."
*Do science homework because it's fun. Do math homework or else you get detention. Anything that's boring or hard, just don't do it. It's not important anyway. Who cares if you fail the class?
*I don't have to learn anything in school because I'm just moving back to Mexico. Or I'm going to be a soccer coach in Mexico. Or I'm going to be a Mexican singer.
*Basically, if they have family in Mexico, they think they are going back there for good. They don't know when, or why, but they're quite certain they're going back there for good.
*My one Somali boy seems happy where he is. Hooray.
At least they're honest...
