books and notification dots

My reading (and listening) has slowed down, but I've done some. Most recently (in March) I finished The Other Wes Moore, by Wes Moore, which I highly recommend. I started Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver, but it sits neglected by my desk most of the time. I tried reading between calls but I'm not good at shifting focus quickly enough. An audiobook called The Innocents by Michael Crummey that I had on hold became available. The parts about the kids trying to survive were good, but I gave up 2/3 through when the book basically became The Blue Lagoon in 1800s Newfoundland. I looked up some reviews and while most were glowing with praise, a few people felt the same way I did. My stockpile of podcasts needs to be replenished, so I started another library audiobook today. It's another memoir, which I like far more than fiction these days, called The Only Girl in the World. It's also another like The Glass Castle or Educated where the more I read, the more I go o_O at this girl's parents.

So, does anyone else have the notification bell with the red dot here on LJ? First thing I usually do when I get on here is look at my inbox messages. Still kind of bitter that for whatever reason, I don't get notification emails anymore. LJ tried to blame my mail server. Anywho. I love the red dot on FB, not so much here. It's not always accurate. It said 6, then I checked, making the dot disappear. Later on it said 98??? Whatever.

I think I'll go sit outside and read Unsheltered. That or watch a movie. I like having a day off in the middle of the week, but not that I have to go to bed at a normal time tonight for work tomorrow. It limits my evening activities.

The LJ bell has been on crack this past week. I hope they get it sorted out soon.

I hate the LJ bell thing ... another try to be more like FB, I guess. Gah!
It started off with 99 for me as well, which seem to be the highest no. possible? I clicked on it once and since then it's been more or less accurate but I still hate it ... *lol*

I'm not getting comment notifications either, except for comments I make myself. I'll have to check my settings, I guess. Although I do sometimes get them on my phone?

When it works, I actually like the bell, which is weird, because usually stuff like that annoys me; I just find it nice to be able to address all my comments (and see likes) in one place, rather than having to go back and forth between my email and the site. I even went into my settings and turned off the option to get comment notifications by email--have you looked there to make sure that you are set up to get them via email still? (I assume yes, since you're so far into troubleshooting, but since I was just editing those settings it came to mind.)

Before I knew about the messages here on LJ, I relied on email to know about comments. But yeah, going back and forth from email to LJ was a pain. Now I get the same notifications in the messages. I generally remember how many messages I had each time on here, so I get excited when the number has grown. I guess the bell tells me even faster than hovering over my name and waiting for the drop menu, but I'm weird and have to clear the bell. Even ages ago when FB first had it, I couldn't let it sit there. I'd get irritated with my sister because hers would be like 90.

I also can't stand red dots on my phone. Only 3 apps have them on, anyway - texts, recent calls, and one of my mail apps.

I checked my settings and sure enough, email notifications were turned off. No idea how that happened. I turned them back on and presto, I'm getting notifications again.
