Northanger Abbey
The Jane Austen movies continued tonight with Northanger Abbey. I liked it better than Persuasion though I have nothing against the latter. John Thorpe ranked up there on the ew!scale almost with Mr. Collins '95. Ick teeth, obnoxious expression, etc. I can't believe NA was Austen's first book. It seems so much different than P&P, at least the movie version.

What did you think of Tilney? The first time I saw it I was head-over-heels in love with him ♥
And yes, Thrope was uber creepy and disgusting. How could Cathy stand to dance with him? *gags*
I was surprised it was her first novel too (although I think I had read that before). NA was a pleasure for me to read, unlike P&P, sadly.

I wasn't all AHHHHHHHHHH crazy like I was after P&P, but I did really like it. I was laying in bed last night thinking about all the things I could have said in this post. It takes me a while to process things :)
All the propriety measures taken back then: couples having to have an escort, having to be introduced at a party before being allowed to converse, etc. They make me laugh. I mean, what is poor Elinor (sp?) doing and thinking as she has to follow Henry and Catherine around? Then, how could Isabella and Cpt. Tilney sneak off in the middle of a party and he just says "get ready before someone notices you're gone"? Henry wiping the mud from Catherine's face and being all worried someone might see him?
Both Persuasion and NA had characters who were majorly concerned with their children even associating with anyone poor or lower status. Dude. P&P had a little of that I guess, but not to the degree of Tilney's father (forgot his title) or Mr. Elliot. How oculd people be that way? I know it happens today as well, but argh.
Henry grew on me after a while. He wasn't immediately attractive, but then again, I kind of like the plainer folk. I didn't even think Darcy '05 was entirely handsome at first.
I saw Carey Mulligan's (Kitty, P&P '05) name in the credits, but didn't even recognize her as Isabella till I looked it up on IMDB.
I'm getting excited to read all these books now!

What doesn't make any sense is that Henry T's father left them alone while he was away. It is kind of weird he would do that. I doubt my parents would let me do that right now! lol
But it did show people were starting not to ignore proper conduct. I can't remember the exact situation, but Catherine asked Thrope if something was proper and he basically said "oh, who cares". And Henry's brother wasn't following conduct either.
Yeah, Carey was bearly recognizable in this compared to P&P. She's grown up and lost some weight, that's for sure. I like the old Carey better, personally.
(this is all very rushed, i've got to go!)
